Raja Harishchandra was the first film of Indian Industry. Dadasaheb Phalke was director of this film. It was released in 1913. This film was a silent film. Whole cast of film were Marathi. This film paved way for full feature length films. The lead actor of the film was DD Danke, the Marathi Actor. The lead actress role was of Anna Salunke who was a male actor. This was a silent movie. This movie didn’t have dialogue, sounds, only actions. The filming was completed in six months and 27 days to produce a film of 3,700 feet, about four reels. Premiere of the film held at Olympia Theatre, Mumbai on 21^st April 19.

“The Story of the Kelly Gang” the first feature length multi-reel film was a 1906 Australian production. It was a classic Australian film with an one hour length. This film was popular and internationally successful 1906 outlaw epic, painted Victorian police in a negative light; its sympathies lay on the side of Ned Kelly, who was hung 26 years before the film was originally released.

The Story of the Kelly Gang is a milestone production, not just here but globally.  This film not just the first full-length narrative feature film made in this country but the first made anywhere in the world. A certain parochial pleasure can be derived from the knowledge feature film-making began not in Hollywood studios but in paddocks and backyards in Victoria.

Artificial lighting in the early years of the 20thcentury could not pass muster through the lens of a camera. Scenes that were based inside had to be completed using sets built outside, resulting in a trippy combination of interior and exterior locations. The film was enough to give us an idea of what watching the film would have been like.

What a fine example of cinematic innovation; what a great reminder that Australians have been pioneers in this space since the beginning.
